Quick answer: To tame an Oviraptor in ARK Survival Ascended you knock it out and feed it eggs: heavier eggs are better, starting with Giganotosaurus and then Quetzal eggs. A level 150 Oviraptor needs 2 Fertilized Giganotosaurus Eggs and about 10 minutes at official 1x rates; on Tharyon, with 8x taming, 1 egg and roughly 5 minutes are enough.
Updated October 2026 for ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA).
The Oviraptor is a small egg thief. It is no fighter, but once tamed it speeds up egg laying for nearby females and can collect eggs around your base. For kibble farms and breeders it is a very handy helper.

How to tame an Oviraptor step by step
- Get the heaviest eggs you can: Giganotosaurus or Quetzal eggs. Small eggs mean you need many more.
- Hold it in place with a bola before it runs off.
- Knock it out with a club, Slingshot or tranquilizer arrows. It has little health: avoid strong weapons.
- Put the eggs in its inventory and keep an eye on the torpor bar.
- Protect it from predators until the tame finishes.
Oviraptor taming food and taming calculator
These numbers come from ARK’s taming formula for a level 150 Oviraptor. The 1x column is the official rate and the 8x column is Tharyon’s rate. They are estimates: hitting the sleeping creature or a game patch can change them slightly.
| Food | Amount 1x | Time 1x | Amount 8x (Tharyon) | Time 8x (Tharyon) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fertilized Giganotosaurus Egg | 2 | 10 min | 1 | 5 min |
| Giganotosaurus Egg | 2 | 10 min | 1 | 5 min |
| Fertilized Quetzal Egg | 4 | 13 min | 1 | 3 min |
| Fertilized Tek Quetzal Egg | 4 | 13 min | 1 | 3 min |
Oviraptor taming time by level with Fertilized Giganotosaurus Egg
| Level | Amount 1x | Time 1x | Narcotics 1x | Amount 8x | Time 8x |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 1 | 5 min | 0 | 1 | 5 min |
| 60 | 1 | 5 min | 0 | 1 | 5 min |
| 100 | 2 | 10 min | 0 | 1 | 5 min |
| 150 | 2 | 10 min | 0 | 1 | 5 min |
A level 150 Oviraptor has about 1243 torpor. With the amounts in the table you usually do not need narcotics on Tharyon, but bring a few in case it takes longer than expected.
Where to find the Oviraptor in ARK Ascended
It is a small feathered dinosaur found on many official maps. Because it is skittish it runs as soon as it sees you, so arrive on something fast or with a bola ready.
Official ARK Survival Ascended maps where it spawns: The Island, The Center, Ragnarok, Extinction, Valguero, Genesis: Part 1, Lost Island.
Oviraptor abilities and uses
- While wandering, it shortens the egg interval of nearby allied females from 17 to 11 minutes.
- Collects allied eggs in an area that grows with its level, up to 90 meters.
- In the wild it can steal eggs without angering the parents (except some, such as Wyvern or Rock Drake eggs).
- Small and light: an Argentavis or a Pteranodon can carry it.
Oviraptor variants
There is an Aberrant Oviraptor, which can be tamed the same way.
Oviraptor breeding
The egg takes 1 h 8 min to hatch and the baby needs 21 h 3 min to reach adulthood at official rates. The egg needs 26-30 °C. On Tharyon (25x hatching and 35x maturation) that drops to about 3 min and 36 min.
Tips and mistakes to avoid
- If you have no big eggs, any egg works, but the tame takes more food.
- Leave it wandering near your egg-laying females to get more eggs for kibble.
- Fence it in so it does not wander too far while in wander mode.
Tame your Oviraptor faster on Tharyon
On Tharyon taming runs at 8x: a level 150 Oviraptor is ready in about 5 min instead of 10 min.
- ARK Survival Ascended with crossplay: PC, PS5 and Xbox.
- 8x taming, 2.5x XP and harvesting, 35x maturation and 25x hatching.
- 11 PvE maps: The Island, The Center, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Ragnarok, Valguero, Lost Island, Genesis 1, Astraeos and Forglar.
- Automatic events (a supply crate every 60 minutes and an event creature every 70), quests and an in-game shop.

Oviraptor taming FAQ
What does the Oviraptor eat for taming?
Eggs. Heavier eggs fill it faster: Giganotosaurus first, then Quetzal; other eggs also work.
How long does it take to tame an Oviraptor?
At level 150, with Fertilized Giganotosaurus Eggs, about 10 minutes at 1x. On Tharyon (8x) it takes about 5 minutes.
Can you ride the Oviraptor?
No. It has no saddle; it is used as an egg helper.
What is the Oviraptor used for in ARK?
It makes nearby females lay eggs more often and gathers eggs from your creatures, ideal for kibble production.
What does the Oviraptor eat after taming?
Raw meat, like any tamed carnivore.
Why is my Oviraptor not taming?
It is almost always one of these: it is not hungry yet (it only eats when its food bar drops, so the first bite can take a while), the food in its inventory is not one it accepts, it woke up because torpor ran out, or something is attacking it. Check that the taming bar goes up every time it eats.
