Carbonemys ARK Taming: Food, Kibble & Calculator

Quick answer: To tame a Carbonemys in ARK Survival Ascended you knock it out with Tranq Arrows to the head and feed it Regular Kibble (its favorite) or, if you have none, Vegetables or berries. A level 150 Carbonemys needs 16 Regular Kibble and about 20 minutes at official 1x rates; on Tharyon, with 8x taming, 2 kibble and roughly 3 minutes are enough.

Updated October 2026 for ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA).

The Carbonemys is a giant turtle: slow, but with a huge health pool and a shell that cancels most incoming damage. It is an easy early tame that works as a tank, a water mount and a steady source of medium eggs for kibble.

How to tame a Carbonemys step by step

  1. Prepare Regular Kibble or, if you cannot craft it yet, a good stack of Vegetables or Mejoberries.
  2. Bring a bow or crossbow with Tranq Arrows. A Slingshot works early on, but it takes longer.
  3. Always aim for the head: shots to the shell barely do anything, and the legs and tail reduce damage too.
  4. If it fights back, just walk away: it is so slow that you can keep shooting while backing off.
  5. Once it falls asleep, put only the food you want it to eat in its inventory and keep an eye on the torpor bar.
  6. Protect it from predators until the tame finishes, especially if it is near water.

Carbonemys taming food and taming calculator

These numbers come from ARK’s taming formula for a level 150 Carbonemys. The 1x column is the official rate and the 8x column is Tharyon’s rate. They are estimates: hitting the sleeping creature or a game patch can change them slightly.

Food Amount 1x Time 1x Amount 8x (Tharyon) Time 8x (Tharyon)
Regular Kibble 16 20 min 2 3 min
Vegetables 160 1 h 36 min 20 12 min
Mejoberry 213 1 h 36 min 27 12 min
Berries 319 1 h 36 min 40 12 min

Carbonemys taming time by level with Regular Kibble

Level Amount 1x Time 1x Narcotics 1x Amount 8x Time 8x
30 5 6 min 0 1 1 min
60 8 10 min 0 1 1 min
100 12 15 min 0 2 3 min
150 16 20 min 0 2 3 min

A level 150 Carbonemys has about 2734 torpor. With the amounts in the table you usually do not need narcotics on Tharyon, but bring a few in case it takes longer than expected.

Where to find the Carbonemys in ARK Ascended

It is a large turtle that stays close to water: riverbanks, lakes, swamps and beaches. It moves very slowly and leaves you alone unless provoked, so it is easy to approach and set up the tame.

Official ARK Survival Ascended maps where it spawns: The Island, The Center, Ragnarok, Extinction, Valguero, Lost Island.

Carbonemys abilities and uses

  • Its shell cuts incoming damage by 80%; legs and tail cut it by 50%.
  • Huge health: very useful for soaking turret fire or distracting other creatures.
  • Faster in water than on land: a good transport along rivers and coasts.
  • The rider can use weapons while mounted.
  • Its medium eggs are used to make Regular Kibble.

Carbonemys variants

The Aberrant Carbonemys from Aberration can also be tamed and has glowing stripes, but it is not immune to radiation.

Carbonemys breeding

The egg takes 1 h 15 min to hatch and the baby needs 23 h 9 min to reach adulthood at official rates. The egg needs 30-34 °C. On Tharyon (25x hatching and 35x maturation) that drops to about 3 min and 40 min.

Tips and mistakes to avoid

  • When its health is low, you can stand on its shell and hit its head with a Wooden Club.
  • If you attack one, nearby Carbonemys will defend it.
  • Its health makes it a good distraction when taming dangerous sea creatures.

Tame your Carbonemys faster on Tharyon

On Tharyon taming runs at 8x: a level 150 Carbonemys is ready in about 3 min instead of 20 min.

  • ARK Survival Ascended with crossplay: PC, PS5 and Xbox.
  • 8x taming, 2.5x XP and harvesting, 35x maturation and 25x hatching.
  • 11 PvE maps: The Island, The Center, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Ragnarok, Valguero, Lost Island, Genesis 1, Astraeos and Forglar.
  • Automatic events (a supply crate every 60 minutes and an event creature every 70), quests and an in-game shop.

Carbonemys taming FAQ

What does a Carbonemys eat for taming?

Regular Kibble first. After that, Vegetables, Mejoberries and other berries, although they take longer.

Where should you shoot a Carbonemys?

In the head. The shell absorbs most of the damage and the legs and tail also reduce it.

How long does it take to tame a Carbonemys?

A level 150 one takes about 20 minutes with Regular Kibble at 1x. On Tharyon (8x) it takes about 3 minutes.

What level unlocks the Carbonemys Saddle?

At level 10.

What is the Carbonemys good for?

As a high-health tank, a slow but tough mount, water transport and a source of eggs for Regular Kibble.

Why is my Carbonemys not taming?

It is almost always one of these: it is not hungry yet (it only eats when its food bar drops, so the first bite can take a while), the food in its inventory is not one it accepts, it woke up because torpor ran out, or something is attacking it. Check that the taming bar goes up every time it eats.
