Deinosuchus ARK Taming: How to Feed the Basking Croc in ASA

Quick answer: To tame a Deinosuchus in ARK Survival Ascended you do not knock it out: wait until it is basking on the shore with its mouth open, sneak up and put food in its mouth. Superior Kibble is the best choice; after that, Raw Mutton or Raw Prime Meat.

Updated October 2026 for ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA).

The Deinosuchus is a huge crocodile made for ARK Survival Ascended. It bites very hard, has armor that shrugs off arrows and melee, and its charged bite breaks bones. It is an excellent fighting mount on land and in water.

How to tame a Deinosuchus step by step

  1. Put Superior Kibble or fresh meat (Raw Mutton or Raw Prime Meat) in the last hotbar slot.
  2. Wear a Ghillie Suit: it makes sneaking up much easier.
  3. Find a Deinosuchus lying on the bank with its mouth open and approach slowly, without getting too close.
  4. When the prompt appears, press E to put the food in its mouth.
  5. Keep feeding it while its mouth is open until the tame completes, and clear predators from the area first.

Where to find the Deinosuchus in ARK Ascended

It is a giant crocodile that swims in swamps, rivers and the sea, and lies on the banks to ambush prey. On The Island it is common around the swamp. Look for one lying on the shore with its mouth open: that is your chance to tame it.

Official ARK Survival Ascended maps where it spawns: The Island, Scorched Earth, The Center.

Deinosuchus abilities and uses

  • Giga Bite: the longer you charge it, the more damage it deals; at full charge it breaks the target’s bones.
  • A tail swipe on land that hits what is around it.
  • Scares off piranhas and floats on the water surface.
  • Its armor heavily resists arrows and melee hits.

Deinosuchus variants

Aberrant, Astral and X- versions of the Deinosuchus also exist on some maps and events.

Deinosuchus breeding

The egg takes 2 h 30 min to hatch and the baby needs 3 d 20 h to reach adulthood at official rates. The egg needs 30-34 °C. On Tharyon (25x hatching and 35x maturation) that drops to about 6 min and 2 h 39 min.

Tips and mistakes to avoid

  • If you have to fight one, pull it onto land: it is slower there.
  • Do not aim at the head: it takes half damage. Shotguns or rifles work better than bows.
  • The broken bones effect does not work on bosses.

Deinosuchus taming FAQ

How do you tame a Deinosuchus in ARK Ascended?

Without knocking it out: wait until it basks with its mouth open, approach and press E to put food in its mouth.

What does the Deinosuchus eat for taming?

Superior Kibble is best. It also takes Raw Mutton, Cooked Lamb Chop, prime meat, fish and regular meat.

Where can I find a Deinosuchus?

On The Island, Scorched Earth and The Center, in swamps, rivers and coasts.

What level unlocks the Deinosuchus Saddle?

At level 74.

Why is my Deinosuchus not taming?

It is almost always one of these: it is not hungry yet (it only eats when its food bar drops, so the first bite can take a while), the food in its inventory is not one it accepts, it woke up because torpor ran out, or something is attacking it. Check that the taming bar goes up every time it eats.
